High Technology for your translations using CAT Tools

Experts divide the translation technology into two distinct categories: machine translation (MT) based strictly on software, and computer-assisted translation (CAT), which is simply used as a support for translators. Although both are continuously and rapidly developing, translators argue that CAT method is the only one offering high quality results. Valley Translation Services uses for large, repetitive or short-term translation projects, native human translators in the target language and computer-assisted translation tools (CAT Tools).

CAT uses a number of tools to help the translators work quickly and accurately, the most important being terminology databases and translation memories. In fact, the computer offers a new approach to text processing for both the source and the target. Working with a digital document gives non-sequential access to information so that we may use it whenever necessary. It thus becomes easy to analyse the sentences of the source text, to check the context in which a word or text is being used, and create, for example, a glossary of terms. Also, any part of the target text can be changed at any time and parallel versions can be obtained for comparison and evaluation.

All these aspects have profound implications for the translation, especially in terms of results assessment because the translator can work in a more relaxed way, enjoying greater freedom when making changes at any time, while the work is on going.

Into practice, computer-assisted translation is a complex process involving specific tools and technology tailored to meet the translators' needs, who is involved in the whole process and not just in the editing step. The computer becomes a workstation where the translator has access to a variety of texts, tools and softwares: for example, mono and bilingual dictionaries, parallel texts, texts translated from a variety of sources and into various target languages, and terminology databases. Each translator can create a personal work environment to transform it according to his/her needs and specific tasks. Thus, computer-assisted translation provides the translator with flexibility and freedom of movement, with immediate access to a stunning array of updated information. The result is a great time saving.
